Analysis of the Video
After listening to the music video by Tom Petty, did you understand the references to velocity and acceleration? No? Well that makes sense because there weren't any. In fact, this video has nothing to do with physics. I hope you got a kick out of it (and it didn't waste your time).
What is Free Falling?
An object in FREE FALL is an object only under the force of gravity. Usually, initial position, difference in time, initial velocity and acceleration due to gravity are usually involved. These concepts will later be incorporated in the motion in two directions chapter.
What Does It Look Like? When a bowling ball and a feather are dropped at the same time, the bowling ball hits the ground first because it's heavier right? Wrong! The feather hits later because it sways around in the air (more information in fluid dynamics). Well what if the air was removed?
My main homie, Galileo Galilei (pictured authentically to the left), tested it out and found that they fell at the same rate (as seen below). Galileo put his research together and wrote Galileo's Law of Falling Bodies. BTW, REMEMBER THIS LAW. YOU WILL NEED IT LATER. |
AS YOU CAN OBSERVE, WITHOUT AIR (IN A VACUUM), THE APPLE AND THE FEATHER FALL AT THE SAME RATE REGARDLESS OF MASS. THIS CONSTANT 'RATE' IS THE ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY. THIS QUANTITY IS 9.8m/s^2.
